February 18, 2016 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Can-Am Duel at Daytona 1 - Non-Points Race Daytona International Speedway Daytona Beach, Florida 'Rookie Chase Elliott's First NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Race in the #24 Car' Bill France gathered thirty five men at the Streamline Hotel in Daytona Beach, Florida for a meeting on December 14, 1947. Throughout three more meetings at the hotel France was able to organize a group of race car drivers under the sanctioning body of NASCAR. NASCAR's first season began in 1948 with its first race being on February 15th at the Daytona Beach and Road Course, a track where drivers raced their cars on the beach during low tides, which was in Ponce Inlet, Florida. Driver Red Byron with Crew Chief Red Vogt in a car owned by Raymond Parks won the race. The Daytona Beach and Road Course had been a location that before France took over was used for land speed records. Millionaire Henry Flagler, who was involved in oil, real estate and the railroad, developed Florida by previously building the Florida East Coast Railway which went from the Daytona Beach area to Miami, Florida. Flagler built a hotel in the Daytona Beach area and suggested racing on the beach there due to the beach's hard packed sand. The railroad industry had been around for some time but the automobile industry was just beginning. Racing began on the beach in the Daytona Beach area during a week termed as 'Speedweek' in March of 1903. H.T. Thomas attempted the first land speed record on the beach that week driving a car built by Ransom Olds (Oldsmobile). Louis Chevrolet (last name speaks for itself) in 1906 attempted a land speed record at the beach. The Daytona Beach and Road Course closed at the end of the 1958 NASCAR season because of the need for expansion. France, who was already in the process of building another bigger and permanent track nearby to replace it, opened Daytona International Speedway in 1959 and since then it has hosted the first NASCAR races (Speedweeks) of every NASCAR season. Today, the Streamline Hotel which is currently under renovation still exists and automobiles, now at a very slow speed, are still allowed to drive on the beach. Moving forward to 2016, Chase Elliott begins his first race in the #24 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series car previously driven by NASCAR legend Jeff Gordon who retired in 2015. Elliott's first race in the #24 car is in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Can-Am Duel at the newly renovated Daytona International Speedway. The speedway's renovation termed as Daytona Rising began in 2013 and was a $400 million project. It is the world's first motorsports stadium which includes wider seats with cup holders, more room on the concourses, escalators, elevators, televisions and much more for the fans unlike any other race track. It is also Elliott's rookie year. Elliott on February 14th in the #24 NAPA Chevrolet SS for Hendrick Motorsports won the pole during Daytona 500 Qualifying, therefore putting him in Can-Am Duel 1 with a 1st place starting position. Elliott upon the green flag of the Can-Am Duel 1 led the first two laps and ended up finishing 6th. Dale Earnhardt Jr. in the #88 Nationwide is on your side Chevrolet SS won the race. 0:00 Welcome to Daytona Beach Bridge 0:20 Daytona Beach 1:42 Streamline Hotel 2:09 Daytona Rising 5:34 Starting Grid 9:35 Chase Elliott's Hauler 9:58 Driver Introductions 16:24 Chase Elliott & Dale Earnhardt Jr. Parade Lap 17:30 Chase Elliott's Pit 17:43 Fireworks 17:56 Pace Laps 19:54 Start 22:05 Chase Elliott's First Pit Stop in the #24 Car 23:49 Cole Whitt and Brian Scott (Caution 1) 24:52 Winner Dale Earnhardt Jr. © 24WARD
