US intelligence officials say Iran was likely responsible for the Aug. 15 cyberattack on Saudi Aramco, the world's largest oil production company, according to a report in the New York Times. This animation illustrates what happened before and after the attack. Experts said the cyber attack involved a company insider. The virus, called Shamoon, may have been introduced via an USB stick before it was unleashed into the company's internal communications network. Scheduled to begin the attack at 11:08am on August 15, the virus erased data on three quarters of the company's computers and replaced the data with an image of a burning American flag. The virus also retrieved the addresses of all infected computers. Saudi Aramco was able to contain the virus before security experts arrived. The company's oil production operations were not affected.
