Unlike hardwood flooring, which requires professional installation, most do-it-yourselfers can install a laminate wood floor themselves in a single afternoon. Hi, I'm Tony Oliva, president of Unique Flooring in Oceanside, California. In this video, I'll give you an overview of the installation process for laminate wood flooring. Please note, this video is not a comprehensive installation guide. PREP: Before you can start laying down your laminate floor, you'll need to make sure the room is prepped and that you have the right tools. You can buy a laminate installation tool kit at your local home improvement store for under $50. Next, you'll need to take out the current flooring. Make sure the subfloor is as flat as possible. This may require grinding down high areas or filling in low areas with leveling compound. Sweep the sub floor to make sure you don't lay down the laminate planks on top of pebbles or other debris. You'll need some sort of underlay material to help cushion the flooring. Some laminate comes with the underlay attached to the bottom of the planks. If not, the underlay you use will depend on the subfloor in the room. Ask your local flooring retailor for a recommendation on what type to use. INSTALLATION: Once all the prep work is done, you're ready to start laying down the laminate. You'll probably be surprised at how simple this task is. Laminate planks come with interlocking tongues and grooves, so they basically lock into place with just a little nudging and tapping. There's no need to glue or nail down the boards. They lay right down on top of the subfloor or underlay. You will need to do some cutting so that the planks fit the size of your room. Remember, you'll be looking at this floor for a long time, so cut with care. Make sure to leave a quarter inch gap between the laminate and the walls to allow the laminate to settle and expand. Your local flooring retailor or the laminate manufacturer can provide you with more specific installation directions tailored to your laminate flooring product. FINISHING: Toward the end of the project, you'll likely need to make a lot of small cuts and adjusts to make sure the floor fits the area. Resist the urge to rush. You may also need to trim the underlay and then install the wall base or quarter round molding. Next, Install the trim tack and trim pieces where needed. The last thing you'll want to do is get a damp towel or mop and wash your new laminate floor to remove any dust or glue. That's basically what you need to know to install a laminate floor. If you're not the do-it-yourself type, that's okay too. Your local flooring retailor can always install it for you quickly and professionally. I always tell clients that if they're unsure, it's probably better to pay a professional to install the floor to make sure it's done right. Here at Unique Flooring, our job is to put the perfect flooring under your feet! Thanks for watching!
