Zika is a mosquito-borne virus that can cause mild fever, rash and red eyes – though an estimated 80 per cent show no symptoms at all. An outbreak of Zika is now affecting at least 25 countries and territories, most of them in Latin American and the Caribbean. The World Health Organization declared the outbreak an international health emergency this week after evidence linking the virus to microcephaly, a birth defect that can cause unusually small heads and permanent brain damage.
